Channel Islands
My favorite holiday has and will always be Thanksgiving. It’s not only the food but also the family that makes it so special. This is the only time of year that my family from Washington and Colorado gets together in California for a full week of fun that ranges from theme parks, escape rooms, movies, and of course, the annual hiking trip on one of the Channel Islands (specifically Santa Cruz). Rich and I have not been able to participate in the past due to work but we finally did and boy, was this trip unforgettable!
As children, my cousins and I were told by my Aunt Vickie and Uncle Huy that seals were mermaids. Even as adults, I can’t help but laugh when I remember the tone my cousin, Andrew, used when he saw his first one, “Why are they so ugly?”
The boat ride from Ventura was about two hours each way and made Rich sick to his stomach, but it was an awe-inspiring experience to be surrounded by THOUSANDS of dolphins while they raced the boat.
Did I walk into a National Geographic ad?
The water is so clear that you can see the seaweed kelp forest below with the swimming fish!
Some members of the group went on a strenuous hike but the rest of us picnicked and enjoyed the views.
Did I mention there are the cutest foxes inhabiting the island??
Thanks to Bob for taking care of the boat fare for the whole group. I’ll be forever grateful for being introduced to the beauties of the Channel Islands. We’re looking forward to next year’s excursion!
