We made it to Juneau! Finally Alaska! Today is our one big excursion off of the ship. Cat and I are going canoeing to the Mendenhall Glacier for some exploring in the ice caves. But that won’t be until this afternoon, so we decided to check out some of the town and stop in for a beer at a local establishment.
Finally we’re off the ship! Welcome to Juneau.
First stop, the Red Dog Saloon; the oldest man-made tourist attraction in Juneau. On display here you can find Wyatt Earp’s gun that he failed to pick up at the sheriff’s office, a massive bear head stuffed and mounted, and a flag (that you’ll see in the background) with 49 stars. Now that we’ve got a beer in us, time for some canoeing.
There’s our new boat…it’s nothing but boats on this trip!
Check out that waterfall!
This is our first view of the Mendenhall Glacier.
I chose this photo for perspective. See those tiny hikers down there? That should give an idea of the size of the glacier.
Time for ice caves!!
I did not edit any of the photos in this post. Normally I do a little contrast and color correcting, but the colors inside of the ice caves were too amazing to mess with. All in all, it was a wet, and somewhat miserable day, but the ice caves were definitely a once in a lifetime experience.
